At The English School of Mongolia (ESM), the safety and wellbeing of every student is our highest priority. We are fully committed to creating and maintaining a safe, supportive, and nurturing environment where all children and young people can thrive — both in school and beyond.
We believe that safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility. All members of our school community – staff, students, governors, parents, and visitors — share a collective duty to protect children from harm and to ensure that their welfare is promoted at all times.
Our Safeguarding Commitment
At ESM, we are guided by the principles and best practice of UK safeguarding standards, including Keeping Children Safe in Education (KCSIE), adapted to our Mongolian context as a British international school. We ensure that:
• All staff receive regular safeguarding and child protection training, including international best practices.
• Our safeguarding policies and procedures are clear, consistent, and rigorously applied.
• Students are encouraged to speak openly about their concerns and are taught who they can turn to for help.
• The school works closely with families and external agencies (where appropriate) to ensure children’s safety and wellbeing.
• Every concern is taken seriously and acted upon promptly by trained safeguarding professionals.
DESIGNATED SAFEGUARDING LEADS
Our safeguarding team provides guidance, oversight, and immediate response to any concerns regarding the welfare of a student.
If you have a safeguarding concern, please contact the DSL directly or approach any member of the school staff, who will ensure your concern is shared confidentially and appropriately.
The DSL will:
• Attend to the student’s immediate safety
• Gather further information
• Assess what harm has occurred or might occur in the future
• Make a safety plan if required
• Work with the student and their family to formulate a supportive case plan
For confidentiality reasons, the DSL will not be able to keep you informed about any assessment details.
Online Safety and Digital Well-being
In today’s digital world, safeguarding extends far beyond the classroom. At ESM, we place a strong emphasis on online safety and digital wellbeing as part of our whole-school safeguarding strategy. Students are taught how to use technology safely, respectfully, and responsibly – both in their academic studies and personal lives.
Parents and carers are also key partners in this work. We provide resources, guidance, and training to help families understand how to protect and support their children in the digital environment.
Visit our Online Safety and Well-being Hub for trusted advice, international resources, and support for families.
Our Message to Families
Safeguarding is not simply a policy — it is a culture of care, vigilance, and trust. We are proud of the strong partnerships we hold with our parents, carers, and wider community to ensure that every child at ESM feels safe, supported, valued, and heard.
Together, we can ensure that all students flourish — academically, socially, emotionally, and digitally.
