It is a privilege to lead the Sixth Form at the English School of Mongolia and to welcome you to Lawson Hill, our dedicated centre for students in Grades 11 and 12.
Lawson Hill represents an important stage in our students’ education. Independence strengthens, aspirations become clearer, and students take increasing responsibility for their own learning. At this level, they engage with a challenging and internationally recognised curriculum while developing the maturity, discipline and critical thinking required for university study and adult life.
Our role is to provide an environment that combines high academic expectations with strong individual support. Students are guided through demanding coursework and assessment, supported in refining their future ambitions, and encouraged to make full use of the leadership, service, co-curricular and international opportunities available to them.
Lawson Hill is therefore more than a place of study. It is a Sixth Form community in which academic ambition is balanced with personal development, wellbeing,
responsibility and global engagement. Through specialist teaching, coordinated academic and pastoral support, and personalised university guidance, we aim to ensure that every student is prepared for the opportunities and challenges that follow school.

IB Diploma Programme Coordinator

Lawson Hill Sixth Form provides an internationally focused academic programme designed to prepare students for university study and future opportunities in Mongolia and around the world.

The English School of Mongolia is an authorised IB World School offering the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme for students in Grades 11 and 12.

Students may follow either:

•  the full IB Diploma Programme, comprising six subjects together with the Diploma Programme core

•  an IB Diploma Programme Course pathway, allowing students to complete selected IB subjects without pursuing the full diploma

Students pursuing the full IB Diploma complete three core components alongside their six academic subjects:

Theory of Knowledge (TOK) develops students’ ability to question how knowledge is constructed, evaluated and communicated across different disciplines and contexts.

The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent research project through which students undertake sustained academic inquiry into a topic of individual interest.

Creativity, Activity, Service (CAS) encourages students to develop beyond the classroom through creative activity, physical engagement, service and reflection.

Together, the core and six academic subjects provide a broad, balanced and challenging educational experience.

Group 3: Individuals and Societies

Group 4: Sciences

Group 5: Mathematics

Group 6: The Arts

Students also complete Mongolian Language and Physical Education in accordance with national curriculum requirements.

May 2026 represented a strong year of progress for the ESM Diploma Programme.

59 active Diploma candidates participated in the examination session, with 38 students earning the IB Diploma. This produced an active-cohort diploma pass rate of 64.4%, an increase of more than 20 percentage points from May 2025.

The highest individual Diploma score was 43 points, the highest achieved at ESM during the five-year period from 2022 to 2026. Successful Diploma candidates achieved an average total of 30 points, while the average subject grade among successful candidates increased to 4.79.

The programme also continued to grow in scale, with 476 IB subject entries in May 2026. ESM recorded particularly strong outcomes across several language subjects and selected humanities, science and arts courses.

Lawson Hill operates a coordinated academic, pastoral and university guidance structure designed to support students throughout the two years of Sixth Form.

The IB Diploma Programme Coordinator oversees the implementation and development of the programme, including curriculum provision, assessment procedures, IB requirements, academic monitoring and communication with students, teachers and families.

Dedicated coordinators provide specialist leadership and guidance for each component of the Diploma Programme core.

Student progress is monitored throughout Grades 11 and 12 through assessment evidence, teacher feedback and academic review. Where concerns emerge, students may receive targeted academic intervention and additional support.

Every Sixth Form student belongs to a form group. Form Tutors provide regular pastoral guidance, monitor attendance and wellbeing, support communication with families, and act as an important point of contact throughout the Sixth Form experience.

Individual university guidance is provided by the University Guidance Counsellor. Students receive support with university research, course and destination selection, application planning, personal statements and essays, application systems and international admissions processes.

The University Guidance Counsellor works closely with the Head of Sixth Form, IB Diploma Programme Coordinator and subject teachers when supporting applications involving predicted grades and academic references.

The Sixth Form programme is delivered by 28 IB subject specialists and five national curriculum teachers.

Our faculty represents more than 13 countries, bringing a wide range of professional, academic and cultural perspectives to Lawson Hill. Teachers work collaboratively across subject areas to support curriculum development, assessment, academic progress and the wider learning experience of Sixth Form students.
